Written by Genaro Relativo
Defending champion Saint Benilde College served notice of its title-retention bid as it blanked Letran, 4-0, to grab the solo lead after 12 rounds in the seniors chess competition of the 85th National Collegiate Athletic Association at the SM Cyberzone in Manila.

Jimson Bitoon led the Blazers by defeating Letran’s Chester Brian Guerrero in board one while Narguingel Reyes and Andrew Delfin followed suit with a win over Randolph Pascua and Jesus Benjamin Lising in boards three and four, respectively, for a quick 3-0 lead.

With the victory, the Blazers now raised their total output to 32 points or half a point ahead over erstwhile leader Letran, which dropped to second with 31.5 points.

In the other matches, San Sebastian College was held to a 2-2 tie with Emilio Aguinaldo College. Despite the draw, the Stags remained at No. 3 with 31 points while the Generals kept their No. 6 spot with 15 points.

Tipon for the Second Win of the RP Boxers at AIBA World Boxing Championship Print E-mail
Written by Genaro Relativo
JOAN TIPON mauled his Sri Lankan opponent on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila) to provide the Filipinos another victory in the 15th AIBA World Boxing Championship at the Mediolanum Forum in Milan Italy.

Tipon, 27, a bantamweight campaigner known for his fast and strong punches, whacked former sparring partner Kamai Gamathiralalage 8-3, after a third round explosion to clinch the win and advance to the round-of-32.

He will face a tough Abdelhaim Ouradi of Algeria.

But the Filipinos failed to keep a clean record when lightweight Joegin Ladon proved to be an easy target for the much taller Thomas Stalker of England. Ladon took a 4-11 beating to become the first casualty of the five-member RP squad.

Tipon, a former Asian Games champion who once thought of retirement, connected with one good punch after another in the third round to turn a close contest into a blow out.

“He improved well,” said Tipon of the Sri Lankan, whom he sparred with several times during a training camp in Baguio City when they prepared for the 2007 world championship in Chicago which also served as the Beijing Olympics qualifier.

His lack of poise in the first and second rounds didn’t escape the attention of coaches Pat Gaspi and Ronald Chavez, something that is expected from someone who rested from fighting in the big stage for so long.

A Hot First Win for RP Boxers Print E-mail
Written by Genaro Relativo

Genebert Basadre says he didn't have trouble disposing of Aamir Khan of Pakistan.

MILAN — A routine win over an inferior foe marked the start of the Philippine campaign here Tuesday evening (Wednesday in Manila) as Genebert Basadre routed Pakistan’s Aamir Khan, 5-1, in the light welterweight preliminaries of the XV World Amateur Boxing Championships.

It was Basadre all the way as his short and stocky foe, looking every inch a rookie, was left to plod miserably through the three-round bout at the Mediolanum Forum.

The lopsided fight would develop early into a mismatch between a school-grader and a graduating high school student.

Basadre is 25, Khan 19.

But, although there was no longer a need for it, the evenly built Basadre poured it on and put up a fiery finish to ensure a lead-off win for the five-man RP team in this 12-day test among the world’s finest amateur boxers.

“Hindi po nahirapan (I had no trouble),” Basadre, a native of Cagayan de Oro, mumbled moments after the bout, the little sweat on his tame face now wiped out.
